Movies and Musos this weekend
Itís big weekend culturally on Magnetic Island with the start of the Magnetic Island Film Festival tonight (see banner right column) and, after a break last month, Magnetic Island Musos Club returns to the MI RSL Hall again tomorrow night with all-Island talent for all to hear.
Following an impressive debut performance at Musos late last year, English post-punk powerhouse, Andrea Kenny returns, having now taken up residence on Magnetic. This is a fascinating development and promises a load of new energy into the Island music scene. Tailor Made are back too but without drummer Ant Renzella. so we will see Murray Taylor in a somewhat different mode wielding a guitar, I hear, and Jeremy Barnes back with his keyboarding brilliance.
But wait thereís more. Coming from his excellent work, raising bucks for the flood victims with the ReBuild3 concert last month, Mal Hamilton is sure to entertain with his clever and witty repertoire Meanwhile, emerging talent, singer/songwriter, Bruno Berthelot is back too. For Musos Club regulars, watching the development of a stand-up comic, who may one day be wowing the masses, is a particularly special experience and, when Marley Hannan takes to the stage with his Andy Kaufman persona or assaults us with Rick Mayall poetry, the night can get pretty weird and wacky.
Musos Club opens its doors at the RSL hall in Hayles Ave Arcadia from 7pm and closes at midnight. Food is available and the bar will be open throughout.
A $5 donation is appreciated from non-members as is a gold coin from members. Under 18s are welcome and no donation is expected but they must be accompanied by a responsible (we know they are out there) adult.
Tonight's movie to open the MI Film Festival, starting at 8pm at the all seasons hotel in Nelly Bay, is the superb Kiwi flick, Boy. It's an outstanding film with the ingredients of a small masterpiece - sad and funny and very entertaining. (click here for more)
