Magnetic surveyed on energy use

Julie Heath The Townsville Queensland Solar City project is surveying Magnetic Island residents and business operators to gauge the community’s views on energy use and energy efficiency. Almost 1,500 energy use surveys were posted this week and customers can return them by post or complete the survey on line by 9 December.

Solar City community engagement manager Julie Heath said the Magnetic Island Energy Survey will help shape the future of the iconic project on the island.

“The information we collect from this research will help the Solar City team make important decisions about the future of the Magnetic Island Solar Suburb project,” she said.

The survey being conducted by independent consultant d-sipher is the second since the project began in 2007.

“With two and a half years still to run on the project, we’d like to compare results with the first survey, find out what residents and business owners or managers think of many of the initiatives we have introduced and understand the best way to continue to engage with the community,” she said.

“We want people to have a choice how they complete the survey,” said Julie. “It’s just important that each household only submits the survey once - either electronically or by reply paid post.”

Approximately 200 business surveys will also be sent this week, which are tailored to the particular energy use needs of commercial customers.

People who receive both surveys are encouraged to complete each of them – one for their household and one for their business.

“When it comes to community energy consumption and conservation, understanding the views and practices of business operators is equally as important as understanding what happens in the home,” said Julie.

“We also hope the results will provide a foundation for other community energy efficiency projects throughout Australia.

“Completing these surveys will also remind people about Solar City offers they may not have taken advantage of yet. Many of these initiatives, such as free energy assessments and Smart Lifestyle Vouchers, are ending on 31 December this year so it’s a good prompt for people to take action if they haven’t already,” said Julie.

Collated results will be available to the project team in late January 2011 and will be made available to the community in April in the project’s quarterly update.

For more information on the residential or business energy survey or other project initiatives, call into the Solar City Smart Lifestyle Centre on Horseshoe Bay Road or phone 4758 1674.

Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
