A young koala's beach adventure

July 1st 2006
Poem by Peter Francis Hughes

In 1997 Peter F. Hughes was working on Palm Island and sailed to Fantome Island for a weekend away. Fantome Island was a leper colony in Far North Queensland until 1970 when the Government abandoned it.

A Free Doomagee

So much trouble in the world,
Noisy people,
Make a policeman's job so hard.
Cause trouble too for politicians,
Lawyers and such.

Now the police challenge the government,
And the Palm Island people,
Are protected by the law.

On a rainy winter's night in Canberra,
I watch the lawyers gather
To talk about something being wrong on Palm.
Red, Black and yellow is their flag,
But where are the people,
The first born of this land.

Still looking for hope,
'Who let the dogs out?'
White man.

But the dogs are barking now Mr Doomagee.
The bone is sharp,
The bone is looking at them.
And mulrunji is in Paradise.
Laughing for his people.

And Mulrinji has become a legend of his people,
All people,
Who have died in custody.
Rest easy my friend,
Coolgaree is yours forever.

Peter F. Hughes January 2007

Juno Bay

The cane fires make the sunset burn
And I learn that the
Gentle breeze makes peace come easy.
For a white man on a yacht
Time forgot to heal his pain,
and claim his birthright
Of the all conquering Anglo-Saxon.
But this bay on this day
Compels open feeling,
of revolt, regret.
Did not the Protector of 'aborigines'
Stop here
In 1929.

The graves of the lepers watch the Bay.
The paintings on the rocks,
Are getting hard to find,
My mind awakes to the cries
of silent voices and I wonder how
It all went wrong

There is a terrible sense of loss, sadness, and regrettable, irretrievable life in your last stanza, Peter. It has certainly impacted upon me and left me asking the same question: 'Where did it all go wrong?' I have only trite and shallow attempts at answers, and I fully respect your refutation of them if you so choose, but I can't help but wonder if so many mistakes of the past were clothed in good intentions. Hindsight is such a great teacher. By the way, I've been reading and pondering your work for the last month or so prior to my response. It's great stuff! RW
