Jazz festival returns this weekend

One of the jazz stars to feature is Ingrid James Just four more sleeps until perhaps the best Jazz festival in Australia begins again here on Magnetic Island with two wonderful days in the company of the cream of Australian jazz plus two visiting American hot shots taking the stage at Picnic Bay for the seventeenth Great Tropical Jazz Party.

Every August, a diverse group of jazz musicians from around the nation gathers on Magnetic Island to celebrate the music and camaraderie that is jazz.

This year the iconic jazz festival will be held in the Picnic Bay Hotel's 'Water Garden Oasis', beachside in beautiful Picnic Bay.

Festival organizer, Marilyn Sheather, explained, “Apart from the exceptional talent of the visiting musicians, the uniqueness of the Great Tropical Jazz Party lies in the fact that all performances are held at the one venue, this enables the musicians to interact and enjoy the holiday atmosphere, plus giving many opportunities to sit in with other great players and have a wonderful time".

An eclectic mix of jazz styles will be presented in three concerts; the Saturday and Sunday afternoon concerts, 12noon – 6pm, each feature four sets, in a relaxed tropical garden setting, all sessions are intimate, laid back and friendly. Food will be available all day in the Water Garden Oasis, dinner service in the evenings. Pre book for dinner in the R&R Restaurant.

The two set 7.30 pm concert Saturday, will feature the John Hoffman Sextet with Ingrid James and the Ben Hauptmann Sextet, followed by the very popular jam session. Sunday night you are invited to join the musicians for their wind-down dinner and jam.

The weekend pass is only $65 and covers all sessions, while individual concert passes are also available. For online bookings go to:

Thanks for the story George. We put the stage cover up this morning and will finish the rest of the set-up on Friday.

The venue is looking fantastic and the first Musos arrive today - I'm not sure who's more exited, them or me :)

See you there for Party No. 17!!!
