Men's Shed takes hold of community centre

Many great Island events have been held at the centre One of the great legacies of the Solar Cities project on Magnetic Island has been the restoration of the old Sport and Rec Club at Horseshoe Bay. And now, as the "Smart Lifestyle Centre" as Ergon called it, has done its job, the Magnetic Island Men's Shed group, who have been tenanting the building on a temporary basis, have taken over the reins of running the building with a ten year lease.

The Magnetic Island Menís Shed was the only organisation on the Island to respond to a council call for expressions of interest to run the facility on behalf of the local community.

Councilís Community and Cultural Committee today approved a council staff report recommending a 10 year lease on the centre building and facilities be issued to the Menís Shed which is auspiced by Magnetic Island Community Care.

Deputy Mayor and Magnetic Island Councillor, Vern Veitch said the facility would be a valuable asset to the local community.

ďIím extremely pleased that the Menís Shed has stepped up to run the facility for the Island community,Ē Cr Veitch said.

ďA very important requirement of the lease is that the centre is managed in a way that encourages community use and meets the needs of local residents.

ďThe Menís Shed was the only group to lodge an expression of interest but showed in their submission that they had the capacity to maintain and run the facility for the broader benefit of the community.Ē

The new lease will cover the renovated building only, and not include the playing field and skate park.

This week's Community and Cultural Committee meeting also backed a recommendation to provide the Magnetic Island History and Craft Centre Inc. with a renewed lease over two buildings on the corner of Barbarra and Granite Streets in Picnic Bay for up to 10 years.

Congratulations to the Men's Shed group. Well deserved and they are so supportive of other organisations. See you for movies under the stars during Bay Dayz in September
