New Bag Limits for QLD Recreational Fishers
There has been a lot of publicity over the last few months about new fishery management plans being introduced by the Queensland Government. While we will be waiting a few more months for the Coral Reef Plan to be introduced, on 9 December new regulations were introduced for a number of species that can sometimes be caught in North Queensland.

Cleveland Bay Collision Concerns
It seems that Cleveland Bay has a reputation that it neither wants nor can be explained at present. The protected waters of the bay are responsible for the highest number of recorded turtle strandings in the state.

On Sunday 16 June 2002, the third large fish kill occurred in The Lakes system in Townsville since Christmas 2001. On this occasion, Paradise Lake (Stage 2) and the Woolcock Street Canal were the main areas where dead fish were seen. Townsville City Council has said that perhaps "only" hundreds of fish were killed but that would only apply to fish easily seen over 15cm. If bait fish are included in the count plus all those that sank to the bottom, tens of thousands of fish is closer to the mark.

Vern's Angle
It is common knowledge that there have not been a lot of spotted mackerel caught over the last few years. Last year they were almost non-existent in Cleveland and Halifax Bays. Up to the late 1990's, it was common to be able to drop the boat in the water for a few hours in late winter and early spring and come home with a feed of spotties. So where have they gone?

What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents,scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
