Opera on the Rock

On Saturday, August 4, the very first, "Opera On The Island" will be held at the Bremner Point (old Arcadia jetty site) on Geoffrey Bay.

The opera is the realization of a dream by Island resident, Barbara Gibbs, who, with help of Dave Stafford of Barefoot art Food Wine and Bruce Edwards of The Underground Opera Company, has worked for 14 months to see the event take place.

Barbara told Magnetic Times, "The local Island community and businesses have been generous of their time and efforts to ensure its success."

The performance is being presented by The Underground Opera Company who are a world class outfit that perform annually at Jenolan and Rockhampton Caves, Bli-Bli Castle and numerous other sites.† See:

According to Barbara, "On Magnetic they will be performing some traditional and more popular operatic numbers in a performance running, overall for over 2.5hrs."

The night will start at sunset with seating beginning at 5.30pm and kicks off with a local Didgeridoo player and Welcome speeches.

There will be a 45 minute interval during which the local Fire Flyz fire twirlers will perform on the barge ramp.†

Tickets start at $70 per person but food will be served to those obtaining the Platinum $99 ticket, and orders will be taken for real wood-fired Italian pizza and coffee from Dellí Isola cafe adjacent to the site.† There will also be organic coffee and juice available on site, and delectable desserts.

The Arcadia Hotel adjacent to the site (where the bus stops) has a bistro and Thai food available for those who wish to place orders or do not wish to have Pizza.

Toilets are available onsite. NO ESKIES please. It is NOT a BYO event.

Buses stop at the Arcadia Newsagency adjacent to the road/entrance to the site, and run almost hourly.†

Arcadia hotel have promised fruit and cheese platters before and after the show with $4 cocktail, beers and champagne to all ticket-holders.

Seating is theatre-style with stacker-style chairs with audience members encouraged to bring a cushion for extra comfort.† Tickets are being taken from 5.30pm to start at 6pm at latest.

Sale of tickets are from Barefoot Art, Food, Wine at Horseshoe Bay ph:47581170, and The Keyboard shop Ph:47794660 or 0419 661 108 on Woolcock/Dalrymple Service Rd in Currajong.

A wonderful inititaive for the Island - I do hope that the word gets around Townsville too. However, there is a clash with the final night of the Australian Festival of Cahmber Music which will take away some staunch music lovers who have had their tickets for that for some time. If you are not at the AFCM - make sure you are at Bremner Point!

Sorry to those who have tickets to the other events, this was not planned to clash, as the CMF was later last year, and we set dates to not clash with other events, as well as availability of performers and presenters.

WE do appreciate the support of those who have chosen to attend the local event, as the success this year will see more in the future. There will always be clashes of dates or weather, and nothing can be done about that unfortunately(:

We hope you enjoy the show.

Syl Hayes In reply to Fair raises $15,000 for school
What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
