There has been much discussion in mainstream media recently about a lack of community spirit in Townsville.
Anyone who was at Magnetic Island's Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday will surely dispute such a statement. What a fantastic morning! Congratulations to Meg and all who volunteered on the day. I still haven’t been able to decide which performance I enjoyed the most – Pink and ABBA were both memorable and highly entertaining. I am sure the Cancer Council will be grateful for all the hard work when the final fundraising figure is tallied up.
I also spent time meeting with locals discussing the issues that are important to them.
I was most interested in people’s opinions about the current day light saving debate. The overwhelming response was ‘no’ to the proposal put forward by the Independent Member for Nicklin, Mr Peter Wellington MP.
This feedback was consistent with the opinions I have received from other parts of the electorate and I will be feeding this back to both the Premier and Mr Wellington.
Thank you to all whom I caught up with on Thursday. Each time I visit I learn something new and am continuously amazed by the strength of your island community.

Letter: Community spirit recognised
Has Ms Johnstone been taking lessons from the Premier in how to be condescending? Do they listen to the 80+% of the population who are strongly opposed to the privatisation of taxpayer owned infrastructure assets? Do not let your TCC rates be put to the cruise ship terminal as some dodgy state govt will flog it off one day to one of their rich maaaates!
Thank you Mandy for attending this annual island event, and for your complimentary comments. Congratulations to the organisers, both present and past. It's a lot of work to arrange these events and much harder to sustain the motivation to keep going every year. Congrats also to the performers, past and present, for your perfomances and being game enough to perform in front of neighbours and friends.
