A young koala's beach adventure

August 22nd 2013
Can you build a boat?

A fine Can boat from Darwin Magnetic Island Rotary Club are holding the inaugural Magnetic Island Beer Can Regatta at Picnic Bay, Magnetic Island on Sunday, October the 6th this year.

This will be a fun day for the family with a number of activities such as a tug of war competition for all ages, thong trowing, and of course various beer can boat events. There is three boat events, a straight race around a buoy and back, a "Henley on Maggie” race where teams carry their boats over a given distance and the day will cumulate in a Battle of Maggie where participants will battle it out on the with flour bombs, water bombs and other non life damaging ammunition in an attempt to sink the opposition. Whilst the winners receive a trophy, the emphasis is on fun, fun, fun.

All events will have prizes.

Boats can be made out of beer cans, soft drink cans or milk containers. Adjudicators decisions are final (they are open to bribery and corruption).

It is important you get your entries in so that we know how many entrants we have, however entrants will be considered up to and on the day itself.

See the Magnetic Island Rotary website (click here) for details.

According to Magnetic Island Rotary, "The day is expected to run from 9am until 2.00pm mainly due to some footy final or something, however this should not stop people enjoying the beach for the rest of the afternoon."

As this is the closing weekend of the annual Magnetic Island Bay Dayz Festival, there will be also be market stalls in the Picnic Bay mall.

Whether it is school verses school, hotel verses hotel, radio station verses radio station, Islanders verses mainlanders, or just entry for the fun of it, everyone from Magnetic Island and Townsville is invited to participate.

All monies raised by the day will be gifted to charity and all the cans will be recycled.

Syl Hayes In reply to Fair raises $15,000 for school
What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
