World Music Gala concert this Sunday

World Music concert performer Kristna Olsen After last year’s great success "Music on Magnetic" opens its doors again to the public with a World Music Gala concert on Sunday May 5, 6pm, involving all the participating teachers and some guests as well.

The venue has changed from the Golf Club to the garden area of the Picnic Bay Pub, which is also the new venue for the festival in general.

The concert starts at 6pm (sharp) to take advantage of that magic hour when dusk falls over the beautiful newly renovated outdoor entertainment area. There will be a long break, and food and drinks will be served by the pub.

The array of talent performing is possibly even more amazing than last year’s:

Kristina Olsen:
A superb instrumentalist (acoustic guitar, steel-body slide guitar, saxophone, concertina and piano) and a powerful singer-songwriter with a big bluesy voice. Based in California but tours the US, Europe and Australia for 10 months a year. Has released 10 CDs including 4 recorded in this country.

Linsey Pollak:
Well-known around Australia as a musician, instrument maker, composer, musical director and community music facilitator. Famous for making instruments from rubber gloves, root vegetables, watering cans, chairs, brooms, bins, and other found objects.

Greg Sheehan:
An innovative performer and teacher of percussion. Uses a huge variety of instruments, tuned  and untuned, organic and manufactured, even extending to the human body. Above all he is probably the finest tambourine player in the country, extracting incomparable and intricate rhythmic patterns from this apparently humble instrument.

Parvyn Singh:
The youngest member of the famous Dya Singh group. Now embarking on a solo career focusing on cultural synthesis and fusion. Combines Indian dance and chanting with Western jazz and soul music. An exciting and vivacious dancer and a soulful singer at folk festivals around the world.

Shenzo Gregorio:
Shenzo is one of Australia’s most sought after string players (violin, viola, mandolin, guitar, bass) not only because of his techniqual prowess, but also because he covers all different styles from classical to Gypsy with equal ease and virtuosity. He has played/plays with groups like FourPlay, Monsieur Camembert, Doch and his own Stunt Orchestra just to name a few.

Plus there will be cameo appearances by famous Flamenco dancer Simone Pope and our own Dani Ceccarelli, fire-twirling ... it’s really a whole music festival squeezzed into one night not to be missed.

Cost is $25 at the door only, so make sure to arrive on time!

Syl Hayes In reply to Fair raises $15,000 for school
What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
