Musos Club this Saturday from 5pm

The Ma La's The regular gig of Magnetic Island Musos Club has changed to the first Saturday of the month, which means that this Saturday we will see the big Musos gig rocking our Island’s socks off with, among others, a huge six piece Townsville outfit, the 'Ma La's', who play an eclectic mix ranging from funk to folk. Once again the location for this Musos club gig will be Sunbirdz Café at Picnic Bay.

There is a great line up of musicians this month including The Ma La's whose lead singer, Lisa Mondo, is a former Islander. Some of the other band members have also played at Island Musos events in the past. The Ma La's have an interesting lineup of musicians including trumpet, violin and piano accordian, with Lisa strumming the banjo, as well as usual drums and strings. As the feature act they will wrap up the night with two sets after our island musicians perform. (See below for some more Ma la's background).

The whole thing kicks off at 5pm with Fiona Moran and her keyboard gently easing us into the night. Following the lovely Fiona is the wonderful duo of Peter Jackson and Dani Ceccarelli. These two pleased audiences immensely last month with their assortment of tunes which told a story as they went along. We are looking forward to the journey they might take us on this time around.

Then we have the well loved island favourites, Sara Shaw with friends Chris and Matt from The Sara Shaw Band, to give us a set of blues, rock, jazz and soul. There’s not a moment to be missed, and no room for amateurs this month.

Magnetic Island Musos Club would like to thank all the participating musicians for donating their time and talent to pull off this awesome gig on Saturday night. Next month’s Musos club will have a fuller lineup of more diverse musicians and singers from all over, so keep an eye out for that one.

Keep in mind that food is also available at Alby's Chinese Restaurant and the Blue Elephant Thai Take Away as well as Sunbirdz, so you are spoiled for choice. Please note however that Sunbirdz is a BYO venue but patrons must be dining if they want to drink alcohol.

An incredible way to start out your Saturday night before heading on to the other island venues for more live music over the course of the evening. Don’t miss Musos Club this Saturday night in Picnic Bay!

The Ma La's

Townsville six-piece The Ma La’s began as a duo in 2010. Fellow Poms-in-exile Lisa Mondo (vocals, guitar) and David Wosner (violin) began jamming and performing Mondo’s self-penned tunes. They soon brought other musicians into the fold, and the band went through several incarnations before they found the perfect mix.

They recruited Davey Pincott (percussion) and Al Boulton (bass) – the downright funkiest rhythm section in Townsville. Ainsley Langdon’s accordion gave the sound a Gallic twist, and the uplifting trumpet of Nick Emtage provided the missing piece of the jigsaw.

The band has performed twice at Palm Creek, as well as the Courthouse Theatre, Townsville Folk Club, and recently on ABC Radio North Queensland. Playing mostly original material, with a couple of obscure covers thrown in, The Ma La’s have a unique sound. An eclectic mix of instruments delivers a musical experience that takes in styles ranging from folk to funk…and beyond.

Catch The Ma La’s for an unmissable set that will blend beautiful acoustic ballads with high-energy funky feel-good dance tunes.

Tonia In reply to The ongoing price of Nelly Bay Harbour
It's 14 years since I last visited Maggy. I am shocked by Nelly Bay and saddened. It is insensitive, ugly and juxtaposed to the essence of Maggy. I embrace progress in general, but this is poorly conceived and executed. Shame.
