Magnetic Fitness comes with a military recommendation

Fiona Porteous She began her Magnetic Island business four years ago in a small studio in Picnic Bay with the worthy goal of providing health and fitness for the Island community. Her name is Fiona Porteous.

Speaking of that time, Fiona told Magnetic Times, I only provided personal training and circuit classes." Fiona is now ensconced in larger quarters at 7 Marine Parade, Arcadia.

"I moved into the new premises over a year ago and decided to open a public gym as well as provide personal training and full schedule of group classes including circuit, yoga, aqua aerobics, boxercise, aerobics, gym4kidz and the veterans class. The gym provides membership with a concession rate for aged pensioners and students.

74 year old Jim Davis, a former naval veteran from the Vietnam war and the Malayan Emergency is one of the Magnetic Island veteran's group who work out with Fiona. Jim told Magnetic Times, "I got involved four years ago when the Veterans and Veterans Family's Community Service organised (and funded) a healthy heart program for vets. Some dropped out over the years but about half a dozen of us enjoyed it so much we continued, paying ourselves, when the program finished.

"It has kept me fitter. I was starting to get overweight but now I can hold my stomach in with confidence.

"I'd recommend Fiona to anyone," said Jim. "She varies the exercises a lot with circuits one day, lots of cardio the next, weights the next and so on. So we don't get bored.

"It's done me good. My stamina has increased and I feel a lot better in myself. I do a lot of walking to supplement it and I've built up my shoulders which were getting saggy.

Jim laughs as he reveals that the vets nick-named Fiona, "Madam Lash" and, "We presented her with a whip!"

And if you are a veteran and, if this attitude sounds like fun, Fiona says she is looking for more veterans to join the class.

"It's a lot of fun. It's exercise and social for us. It's done us a lot of good over the last four years," says Jim.

Fiona told Magnetic Times, "We also run 12 week challenges which are fantastic for people who want to start and haven't had a lot of experience in a gym and need some motivation and advice."

Fiona works with a client

The challenge includes initial, 6week and 12 week health/fitness assessment, a personal training session every fortnight, individual program design, full access to the gym at all opening times. The Challenge is valued at over $500 but is presently available for $290.

The gym now operates with a fully equipped gym pool and group fitness room

The gym is available for casual use at $10pp or for a 10 visit pass it's $80.

Tonia In reply to The ongoing price of Nelly Bay Harbour
It's 14 years since I last visited Maggy. I am shocked by Nelly Bay and saddened. It is insensitive, ugly and juxtaposed to the essence of Maggy. I embrace progress in general, but this is poorly conceived and executed. Shame.
