Extra ferry at 3.30am for Full Moon Party

Base at Nelly Bay Magnetic Island residents are likely to be paying a little more attention tonight and especially early tomorrow morning to the after effects of this month’s Base Full Moon Party which starts tonight at the beach-side backpackers in Nelly Bay.

Following the last FMP a row erupted between Tourism Operators and Business Magnetic Island (TOMBI) and Base over drug and alcohol-fuelled vandalism and mess created at the Nelly Bay Harbour terminal and along Nelly Bay beach. (read here) Since then Base have meet with TOBMI to develop new approaches (read here)

As a result an effort has been made to improve the situation with extra security being employed by Base at the terminal and, now, an extra ferry service from Sunferries at 3.30am. Previously there had been a 3 and a half hour wait between the 1am and 4.30am service.

TOBMI President, Dr Lindsay Simpson, said it was important an event on such a large scale was managed well and that the community was considered.

“While the Full Moon Party is a drawcard for younger tourists and it puts the Island in the limelight they have to make sure it is properly run.

"We can have up to 2000 people attending and we hope that with such a large event, patrons are encouraged to spend more time on our beautiful island. We are glad that there has been increased security and more ferry services to ensure everyone is safe and it is an event to remember."

With domestic and international visitors travelling specifically to our region for this event each month and the increase in calibre of performers to the event, the FMP is being promoted to become an iconic event for Townsville and North Queensland region.

Townsville Enterprise – General Manager Destination Market and Development, Scott Waters said, “The renewed focus of all stakeholders working together in circumventing issues and being forward looking in building the event to be a world class draw card is extremely pleasing. This is good news for the tourism industry on Magnetic Island and the greater North Queensland region. The event brings a high level of profile within the Youth and Adventure market and as a result will see more international visitor’s within this market segment as the event’s profile grows.”

With FMP emerging as the most prominent event in Magnetic’s international profile, all aspects of its operation are likely to attract continued scrutiny. Let’s hope tonight’s party will show real progress is occurring.

What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
