"Fair Game" this Saturday
Fair Game, the dirty little story behind the outing by the Bush administration of one of their own CIA agents, Valerie Plame, in the lead up to the Iraq war, is this month's movie presented by the Magnetic Island Film Society at "all seasons" hotel on Mandalay Ave, Nelly Bay, this Saturday night at 8pm.
ABC's At the Movies reviewer, David Stratton wrote, "Some of you may remember the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame in the American press. FAIR GAME is the story of that outing and the purported reasons behind it.
NAOMI WATTS stars as the covert high-powered agent investigating the biological and weapons program of Saddam Hussein. She's married to former diplomat Joe Wilson - SEAN PENN. They have children and they juggle their various professional demands, family and a relationship. But things get a bit tense post 9/11 and in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq. Wilson, who had expertise in Africa, was asked to investigate the possibility of Niger supplying yellowcake to Iraq. When Joe finds his research about the basis for Iraq building up weapons of mass destruction ignored, he ultimately takes to the press with dire results.
This is a fascinating insight into the behind the scenes story of a story - admittedly based on the memoirs of both the Wilsons. Performances are tops. I have to admit SEAN PENN can do no wrong. I admire him as a performer and a filmmaker. NAOMI WATTS is maybe not fabulous in this but she is certainly impressive. This is a complex story of ego, secrecy, bombast and outright lying that has been very cohesively told.
