Scott Cam plugs the outdoors to save energy
TV personality Scott Cam was an enthusiastic guest speaker – keen to encourage Islanders to adopt Ergon's 20 + 10 incentive scheme for clients who save 20% of their power per quarter to receive a 10% discount on their bill - at the Solar Suburb Trade Expo and Incentive Launch last week at the Smart Lifestyle Centre in Horseshoe Bay.
The expo included a wide range of businesses keen to promote ways of reducing our energy footprint.
Ergon's Solar Cities Team Leader, Graeme Pollock, introduced the scheme (details below) and Scott Cam was keen to support the message and encourage Islanders to make the most of their climate and use the outdoors more for a wider range of daily activities.
Peter Wait from Home Hardware in Nelly Bay was keen to assist the outdoor lifestyle with a big gas cooker.
“You can eat outside and use the breeze instead of the air con. You can even watch telly and do homework outside. Shorter showers seem obvious but if you become conscious of it you can save a fortune” said Scott.
Locals and Councillors Vern Veitch and Trevor Roberts were amongst the Expo visitors.
The basic incentive behind Ergon's 20+10 scheme is that if you can reduce your energy consumption by 20%, comparing one quarter to the same quarter the previous year, Ergon will give you 10% back on the value of your bill. They will do this every quarter you do. And if you can keep it up for a whole year, they'll do it again and give you another 10% back for the entire year so not only will you pay less for your lower bills you will also receive vouchers up to 20% of the value of your electricity for the year.
Scott Cam, who also visited the MI State School with his energy saving messages, was truly delighted to be on Magnetic Island. “It's absolutely outstanding. I'm told many people who live here came for two days and never left” said Scott who may be in peril of the same reaction. “I might have to have a proper holiday here with the family.”

Syl Hayes In reply to Fair raises $15,000 for school What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
