Since Otar Left

Since Otar Left This Saturday night at 8pm the MI Film Society resumes for the year with Since Otar Left - a superb and sensitive drama that reveals the hardships and complex relationships between a grandmother, mother and daughter crammed into a tiny apartment in grey, post-Soviet, Tsibili capital of Georgia.

Directed by French director, and former documentary maker Julie Bertucelli, this multinational production made in Russia (Georgia) France and Belgium centres around the family's fixation with Otar, the son of Eka (the grandmother played brilliantly by 90 year old Polish actor Esther Gorintin), who has gone to live in Paris in search of a better life. The women's lives revolve around whatever letters, phone calls and money they receive from him.

When something happens to Otar the drama moves toward a game of deception which underscores the family's desperation while revealing the inner natures of the younger women.

ABC TV's Margaret Pomeranz along with co-host David Stratton, on At the Movies gave this film 4 and a half stars. In her review she comments, "The frustrations of the two younger women, whose experiences are very different, are achingly well conveyed. But it's the wonderful character of Eka, a matriarch whose tenacity and optimism reminded me of Steinbeck's Ma Joad, who gives this outstanding film its heart and soul".

Since Otar Left is rated M and runs for 103 minutes. The MI Film Society screenings are held at the RSL Hall, Hayles Ave Arcadia.

Syl Hayes In reply to Fair raises $15,000 for school
What a wonderful outcome for the school! I had a great time face-painting with Luke and Sasha, met lots of kids and parents, scored some great books at the Trash n Treasure stall, and even remembered to vote. Everywhere you looked people were enjoying themselves...such a tribute to the organisers. Well done!
