Community "heart" to be awarded
With support from Townsville City Council (TCC) Sunferries have initiated a series of awards for community service on Magnetic Island.
The Heart of the Community Awards were first mooted to Council by Sunferries' Manager Mick Reilly about a year ago and it seems the idea has gained merit with TCC willing to support a big day of fun and community activities on the Island on Sunday March 14.
Mick Reilly told Magnetic Times, "This is an opportunity to recognise the unsung heroes of Magnetic Island. There is so much community work done which cannot easily be seen by the wider community so we're hoping that we can do something that shows the community's appreciation for those individuals."
Mick Reilly was also keen to draw as many community organisations into the day's activities. "It's an opportunity for all the Island's community organisations to show off their talents and skills" he said.
The awards will be presented in ten categories including: Community Leadership, Environmental Protection, Island Business Promotion, Exceptional service to the community, Promotion of Magnetic Island Arts, Nature-based tourism development, Aged Care assistance, Youth services, Outstanding work in areas of historical significance, Outstanding charitable and fundraising activities.
Island residents are urged to vote with a form provided by Sunferries in the their Ferry Tales newsletter. A special prize of a Sunferries Gold Pass, which entitles the bearer unlimited free travel on the ferries for 12 months, will be drawn from the voting entries on the big day but to win the Gold Pass entrants must be present on the day of the award to receive the prize.
Quest Townsville are also sponsoring the event with a nights accommodation donated to each of the awardees. The award winners will also receive a flexi-pass from Sunferries.
A list of 40 names based on quantitative research and public consultation have already been listed on the voting forms as suggested candidates but Mick Reilly sees this only as a starting point and wants residents to nominate and vote for any other person they think appropriate to the categories.
The winners of each award will be presented with a certificate acknowledging their contributions.
Nomination forms are available from Sunferries vessels and the terminals in Townsville. They must be completed with the nominating resident's name address and phone number included and returned with the form to Sunferries by the close of business Monday March 1st at 5pm
