A young koala's beach adventure

A BIG thank you!!!

I would like to express my grateful thanks to all the people who helped save the Picnic Bay Jetty. This was a campaign of the people for a people's asset.

Those who attended the public rally and assisted in other ways have helped preserve one of Magnetic Island's truly historic treasures.

What a great community we live in. Without the support of so many people this would not have happened.

Thanks in particular to the Townsville Bulletin's Doug Kingston who helped drive the campaign; to Jo-Anne "Sports" Hugo and Margy Gaynor for organising petitions; to David "Crusty" Herron for his enthusiasm and support with the rally - sourcing amplifiers and loudspeakers was definitely not as simple as one would think; to Mark Tull and the RSL for organising a raffle to pay for the sound system; to Dr Harry" Cooper for moral support and endorsement at the right times; to 4TO's Steve "Pricey" Price for his enthusiasm and especially his help at the rally; to Lorna Hempstead for tirelessly putting the Island's case to various government departments and for keeping the momentum going with "Full Moon" picnics etc; to Simon Brown for the "Save Our Jetty" signs; to the volunteers (who wish to remain nameless) who delivered 4 separate letterbox drops to all Island addresses; to Mary Ann Law for that great photo and to Whitey for providing the crane/platform for Mary Ann; to 4TTT's John "Hubbs" Hubbard and Barry "Hammo" Hamilton; to Zanita Davies for her help with the historical aspect; and last, but definitely not least, to the enormous crowd from Townsville and Magnetic Island who took their boats, signs and families to the public rally and ultimately sent a very strong message to the State Government in Brisbane.

Also to those who kept a low profile but still helped with the campaign, you are appreciated by us all and I am sure eventually by future generations who will benefit from this valuable community asset.

Oh, and I suppose I should also thank those elected representatives who actually made this wise decision. Fair dinkum, goodonyas.

It would not have happened without you all.

In closing, I might mention that now we have this fantastic asset, I would urge everyone to utilise it for its true value; please get behind the Full Moon functions; teach your kids to fish from the Jetty; show it to your visiting friends and relatives; perhaps someone could organise a mini Museum or Marine Interpretive Centre at the end of the Jetty. Now let us all take ownership of the Picnic Bay Jetty. It truly belongs to our community

Thank you everybody,

Steve Anslow

Tonia In reply to The ongoing price of Nelly Bay Harbour
It's 14 years since I last visited Maggy. I am shocked by Nelly Bay and saddened. It is insensitive, ugly and juxtaposed to the essence of Maggy. I embrace progress in general, but this is poorly conceived and executed. Shame.
